Hello –

This week’s special edition CDC Salt e-Update includes new research regarding sources of sodium intake in children.

New Study Identifies Top 10 Sources of Sodium Intake in Children
A new study published today in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report found more than 40% of US school-aged children’s sodium intake comes from the following 10 food categories: pizza, bread and rolls, cold cuts/cured meats, savory snacks, sandwiches, cheese, chicken patties/nuggets/tenders, pasta mixed dishes, Mexican mixed dishes, and soups. Results also indicate –

·         US children ages 6 to 18 years eat an average of about 3,300 mg of sodium a day before salt is added at the table.

·         Approximately 65% of sodium intake is from store foods, 13% from fast food/pizza restaurants, and 9% from school cafeteria foods.

A related CDC Vital Signs Town Hall Teleconference entitled, “
School's in Session: Taking Steps to Reduce Sodium in Children's Diets” will take place at 2 pm today and discuss how school districts are meeting the new USDA sodium guidelines. The meeting will be archived. The study, “Vital Signs: Sodium Intake Among U.S. School-Aged Children — 2009–2010” may be found here:http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm63e0909a1.htm?s_cid=mm63e0909a1_w. Information about the Teleconference may be found here:http://www.cdc.gov/stltpublichealth/townhall/2014/09/vitalsigns.html.
